Under this priority area, the UN in Kenya will support the Government of Kenya, civil society organizations, NGOs and other non-state actors to ensure that the most vulnerable groups (including young girls and women) are educated, healthy, well nourished, have clean water and sanitation, are protected, empowered and live in decent homes within resilient communities under 7 key areas including
- Education and training including sports, culture and the Arts
- Health
- Nutrition
- HIV/AIDS
- WASH
- Social protection and prevention and response to violence against women and children
- Population, urbanization and housing
- Resilience
This is aligned to several national development plans including MTP III of Vision 2030 and the Government of Kenya’s ‘Big Four’ Priorities (a) Food and Nutrition Security; (b) Housing; and (c) Universal Health Coverage, while contributing to a solid foundation upon which to achieve the fourth priority: (d) Manufacturing, through supporting the development of an appropriately trained, healthy and secure workforce, well prepared to meet the needs of the developing manufacturing industry.
Ø Reduction in maternal mortality (from national average of 488/100,000 in 2008/8 to 362/100,000 in 2014)
Ø Births attended by skilled health personnel increased nationally from 44% in 2013 to 62 % in 2015.
Ø Exclusive Breastfeeding Rates increase by 50%
Ø Wasting reduced by 5%
Ø Anaemia reduced by 50% in women of reproductive age
Ø No increase on overweight children
Ø Low birth weight reduced by 30%
Ø The Security and Cohesion Index stands at 56% (national average)
Ø The population of those in need of food assistance has also gone down in the last 2 years (from as much as 1.5 million to as low as around 600,000) and focus is reported to have shifted from relief to resilience building.
